PREGAME

So I'll start putting some stuff up here around 5pm.

In the meantime, my questions are these:

What are the mortal locks? (Other than Christian Bale?)

How is Hailee Steinfeld a supporting actress nomination and Jeff Bridges a lead? People saw this movie, right?

Where the hell is Animal Kingdom?

Still time to choose your own picks. I know you'd hate to miss that chance at that sweet, sweet cheddar. ($3, via paypal to the winner-or in the case of a tie, it will be divided.)

In the meantime here's the worst oscar video I've ever seen. Unquestionably. Hat tip to Shelley for this.
(oh yeah it's blurry and nine minutes long.)

I feel like it is a guide post that tells you so much about the dark heart of the Oscars. It's more a promotional show than an awards show. But this is one of those rare promotional moments where nearly every product they were selling would end up at Big Lots.

Mortal locks:
Best actor: Firth. If I had to bet my life on one and only one category, this is the one
Best supporting actor: Bale. Why do I choose best actor instead of best supporting for the "bet your life" bet? Because I can at least conceive of a world where Geoffrey Rush wins this category. It's not likely - Bale should win this 9 out of 10 times - but Firth is just that much more of a lock.

Possible upsets: Portman is the woman to beat in best actress, but I have a feeling Bening could pull this out with some career appreciation votes.

One more mortal lock: The Social Network for adapted screenplay.
